Massachusetts Marijuana Information & FAQ
Recreational marijuana is officially legal in Massachusetts. The decision to legalize it actually passed in November 2016, as similar ballots across the United States popped up on election day, but the voting result has now been formally certified by the Governor's Council, The Boston Globe reports.
Now, in the state, anyone 21 and over — as is the case with alcohol — can legally smoke marijuna as long as it's in a private residence (read: not on the streets and where smoking tobacco is prohibited). But people 21 and over will still have to wait awhile before they can legally purchase it. As is the case in California, the state has until 2018 to figure out the systems they need to put in place to allow the legal sale of it with licenses.
